1. Where will my loved one be taken?

The deceased will be transported to the Park County Coroner facility in Fairplay, CO.

2. When can I get a death certificate?

A pending death certificate will be signed as soon as possible after an autopsy or exam is complete. A final Death Certificate will be issued once all required tests are completed.

3. Where do I obtain death certificates?

The Park County Clerk and Recorder will sell you Certified copies of the Death Certificate. The current cost is $20 for the first and $13 for each additional Copy. Your Funeral Home may assist with this.

4. Will an autopsy be performed?

The Coroner determines whether an autopsy will be performed. This is done on a case-by-case basis. Autopsies are performed when the cause of death cannot be substantiated by other means and when the case requires forensic documentation for prosecution or other reasons.

5. Why is the Coroner involved?

By state law, the Coroner is required to investigate all deaths not attended by a physician and any deaths occurring within 24 hours of admission to a hospital. The Coroner determines circumstances, manner, and cause of death. The Coroner is an independent investigator of deaths whether it be natural, accidental, suicide, or of a criminal nature.

6. What about tissue / organ donation?

The approval of the Coroner's Office is required for tissue / organ donation. The wishes of the deceased for organ / tissue donation will be evaluated on an individual case basis. If donation is approved, the Park County Coroner’s Office will be glad to assist in the coordination of the donation procedures. In rare cases donation of organs / tissue needed for a complete investigation will not be approved.

7. Is it necessary for me to personally identify the body?

No. In a majority of cases, visual identification is not required. If identity cannot be established easily, you may be contacted to provide assistance in obtaining medical or dental records.

8. Is viewing allowed?

No. The Coroner facility is not designed to provide viewing. Arrangements can be made at the funeral home.

9. What should I do now?

Select a funeral home or whole body donation service as soon as possible. Ask them to call the Park County Coroner's Office. If the deceased is to be removed out of state, ask the mortuary from that state to coordinate with a local mortuary for the necessary services.

10. If there are no funds for funeral arrangements, what can I do?

If the deceased does not have sufficient funds for burial, the next-of-kin may apply for county disposition. The Social Services Office phone number is (719) 836-4139.

11. How long before the Coroner releases my relative / friend?

Generally it should not take more than two or three days. The Coroner will advise you if there are circumstances that may delay the release. Your funeral director will coordinate the release on your behalf.

12. Will autopsy and Coroners reports be available?

Fill out the Autopsy Report Request form and you will receive them via email. If you have further questions call 719-836-4340.

13. How can I recover personal possessions?

The legal next-of-kin may claim any personal possessions in the custody of the Coroner. Please call the Coroner’s Office at (719) 836-4340 before coming to claim items. Clothing is not considered property and may be released to the mortuary with the body. If the clothing presents a health hazard it may be disposed of for the safety of all persons involved.

14. Will I be charged for Coroner services?

No. You will not be charged for the services ordered by the Coroner.
