1. How do I find out about my ancestor who lived in Park County?

You may be able to find out something about him by going to Park County Archives and searching for the name or the place he or she lived or worked.

You can also try searching for the last name in old copies of the Fairplay Flume on Colorado Historic Newspapers.

2. We own an old house. What does it take to get it designated as a historic place?

A building, site, or object must have a story to tell and must continue to tell that story by still looking like it did at its most important time in history. You should contact the Director at (719) 836-4298 and discuss what you know about the historic site or how to find more information about it. View a copy of the application for nominating the property or site as a Park County Historic Landmark to see what kind of information would be needed for the Park County Historic Preservation Advisory Commission to consider recommending that the Board of Commissioners designate the property as a Park County Historic Landmark.

3. If I get my property designated as a Park County Historic Landmark or on the Colorado or National Register of Historic Places, will that restrict what I can do with the property?

No. Designation to any of these lists of historic places or being in a historic district does not affect your property rights. The purpose of the lists is to honor historic places, buildings, or objects that help tell the story of the community, county, state, or nation.
